Eight musicians in a hollow in the dunes on the isle of Terschelling at 6 a.m. Warm coats on, scarfs around their necks. In 30 minutes, the first light will crawl over the dunes. Meet collective Winterdagen, a group of musicians that - as their name suggests - embraces winter.

Fronted by producer and composer Mink Steekelenburg, Winterdagen explores the fringes of neo-classical piano music and electronics. In 2018, Dutch theatre festival Oerol invited Steekelenburg to document the winter on Terschelling in music and film. With a group of eight Dutch, Danish and Icelandic musicians, and a filmmaker, Steekelenburg set out to the freezing island for a two week residency. The residency resulted in the group’s new album Foarlôn, which will be released on July 16th 2021.

The winter on the isle has been documented into Winterdagen’s first album as an equal collective. In stead of using Steekelenburg’s piano compositions as a starting point, as Winterdagen usually does, these compositions have been built on analogue synth patterns,
electronics, field recordings, drums and percussion by two drummers, guitars and live strings. This has resulted in an album that sits somewhere in between ambient electronics and post-rock.
